Chromosome patterns in children with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia at relapse
Purpose: In this work we present the results of cytogenetic analysis in 8 children with acute myeloid leukemia studied at relapse. The aim of this investigation was to obtain further data on acquired chromosome aberrations and their clinical implications in children with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia. Method: The investigation was performed on slides obtained from a 24- hour peripheral blood or bone marrow cultures. For chromosome identification GTG- and CBG-banding method were used. In 5 children the analysis was performed at diagnosis and at relapse, while in three patients at relapse. Results: In two children a normal diploid karyotype was found at both initial presentation and relapse, while clonal chromosomal aberrations were detected in 5 patients at relapse. We observed some recurrent chromosomal aberrations such as t(8 ; 21), deletion of the long arm of chromosome 11 and t(9 ; 22). Of special interest are structural rearrangements of chromosome 3, extremely rare rearrangement in children with acute myeloid leukemia. Conclusion: Our observation imply that additional studies are necessary in order to determine the frequency, clinical and prognostic significance of rare recurrent aberrations in children with AML.
