Approach to construction solution in relation to predominant wear mechanism
Based on wear subjected parts during oil production, the connection of wear mechanism and construction layout has been analyzed. Segments of the snail-wheel of screw extruders and knives of oil dough grinders of different production were chosen as characteristic parts to examine structure, hardness and wear marks during a period of several years. An unambiguous link was finally established between inadequate construction and excessive, unexpected wear which lead to both direct cost increase and standstill losses. Similar observations were made on grinder knives that exhibited unforeseen damage to sleeves and axles. For screw extruders, it was found that welded facing of frontal matches of snail-wheel segments can decrease the negative impact of their faulty construction, while the choice of quenched and tempered steel should be preferred over cemented steel for grinder knives for the same reason.
