A heterometallic [Cu_IIZn_II] system with three types of mutually analogous dinuclear entities (CuCu, CuZn, ZnZn)
There has been a constant growing interest for novel solid-state architectures as potential functional materials in the fields such as catalysis, luminescence or magnetism. The reach binding facilities of the oxalate C_2O_4^2– anion, and its ability of mediating magnetic exchange interaction between the paramagnetic metal centres has given rise to a great number of homo- and heterometallic oxalate-bridged complexes. The synthesis of heterometallic systems is more demanding, the main task consisting in avoiding the formation of mixtures of homometallic species. In relation to our current studies on polynuclear transition metal complexes, the heterometallic compound [Cu(bpy)Cl(µ -C_2O_4)Zn(bpy)Cl] (1) (bpy = 2, 2'-bipyridine) has been synhesized. The EDS spectrum of a single crystal of 1 has revealed that the compound contains Cu and Zn in the atomic ratio close to 1. The structure of 1 consists of three types of mutually analogous dinuclear entities: [Cu(bpy)Cl(µ -C_2O_4)Cu(bpy)Cl] (CuCu), [Cu(bpy)Cl(µ -C_2O_4)Zn(bpy)Cl] (CuZn) and [Zn(bpy)Cl(µ -C_2O_4)Zn(bpy)Cl] (ZnZn), randomly distributed throughout the crystal in the molar ratio of 1:2:1, confirmed also by the measurements on SQUID-magnetometer. In addition to the magnetic susceptibility and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies, the characterization of the novel compound has been accomplished by means of IR, UV/Vis and EPR spectroscopy as well as by TG/DTA analysis.
