Hsp gene polymorphisms and COPD
Genes encoding members of the heat shock protein (Hsp) 70 family, hsp70-1, hsp70-2 and hsp-hom, lie in the class III region of the human major histocompatibility complex (MHC). Hsp70-1 and hsp70-2 genes encode the major heat inducible Hsp70. Hsp70-hom encodes a protein that is highly related to Hsp70-1, but is not heat inducible. Polymorphisms of these genes have been reported to be related to diseases associated with an immune component as well as an oxidant/anti-oxidant imbalance. In the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the oxidant-antioxidant pathways have been suggested to play an important role. Therefore hsp70-2 A/G (+ 1267) and hsp70-hom T/C (+ 2437) gene polymorphisms were analysed in patients with COPD (n=32) by PCR-RFLP procedure. The obtained data showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the genotype and allele distributions of hsp70-2 (Chi square test, P = 0, 186 for genotype and P = 0, 123 for allele distribution) and hsp70-hom (Chi square test, P = 0, 859 for genotype and P = 0, 732 for allele distribution) between patients with COPD and control subjects.
