Isolation and identification of Brucella melitensis in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina: An example of regional cooperation

In the last decade brucellosis has been a significant problem for both public and animal health in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBIH). A total of 98659 of serum samples were tested. 12358 from cattle, 83190 sheep and 3111 goats samples, , from 10 cantons of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina were serologicaly investigated on the Veterinary faculty Sarajevo by using Rose bengal and complement fixation tests. Both tests resulted positive in 5, 3% sheep ; 0, 24% goat and 0, 04% cattle samples. Positive samples to both tests, were 5, 30 per cent for sheep ; 0, 24 per cent for goats and 0, 04 per cent for cattle. Also, research (Serologicaly investigations) showed that brucellosis was distributed throughout all cantons of FBiH. Bacteriological testing of ruminant material, as well as molecular identification and typisation of isolates was carried out in Croatian Veterinary Institute, Zagreb, Croatia. Isolates were identified as Brucella sp. using a simple polymerase chain reaction (PCR) that targets a gene for membrane protein BSCP-31, which all brucellae have in common. Molecular typing was performed (by) using ''AMOS PCR''. All isolates were identified as Brucella melitensis. This cooperation is a great example of how good understanding between neighbouring countries can contribute to a better control of animal infectious diseases.
