Pillow lavas of Hruskovec quarry, Kalnik Mt., NW Croatia : An evidence of the advanced rifting stage in the Tethyan domain

The Hruskovec quarry of basalt related rocks is situated on the northwestern slopes of Mt. Kalnik, within the Zagorje-Mid-Transdanubian zone, a part of the North-western Dinarides. The basaltoids are inter-bedded with radiolarites of the Middle and Upper Triassic age (Langobardia, Carnian-Norian). Spilites, altered diabases and meta-basalts form a part of Triassic volcanic-sedimentary sequence, made of sandstones, shales, micritic limestone, altered vitric tuffs and radiolarian cherts, incorporated tectonically into the Jurassic-Cretaceous mélange. The architecture of the huge pile of intrusive-extrusive basaltoid rocks could be interpreted as a basalt cryptodome, rather than a high level intrusion, or a simple lava flow. The presented research deals with variety of volcanic facies of the cryptodome, long a few km, thick several hundred meter. The cryptodome consists of several prominent facial units: 1. Coherent pillow lavas, with massive core ; The bending rims around the massive core, thick 30-50 cm, are dissected by polygonal columnar joints radiating from the center, 2. Closely packed pillows ; Densilly packed and contorted pillows due to the implacement accommodation, with clear younging upward ; 3. Pillow fragment breccia ; Clast supported, matrix poor, monomict breccia, formed in a proximal position to the axis of the extrusion ; 4. Isolated pillow breccia ; Matrix supported, clast poor breccia, made of lava pipes, tubes, within the matrix of fine-grained sideromelan granules and shards ; 5. Pyjamas-style pillows ; Spherical pillow lava balls, cm-m in size, grown and chilled in isostasy, within water-soaked sediment, named after peculiar alternating basaltic shelves inside the sphere, encrusted with white secondary minerals ; 6. Peperitic hyaloclastics. Blocky and globular peperites developed at the contact soft, wet sediment and hot intruding magma. Discovery of peperitic hyaloclastics within the Triassic radiolarian cherts, shales, as well as registration of conodonts in micritic limestones of the peperite, links their origin to the magmatism of the advanced rifting stage in a progressively subsiding basin, during Triassic time. It excludes an alternative, affiliation of the cryptodome to the dismembered ophyolite formation, a product of oceanization created during Jurassic-Cretaceous time, as commonly stated. The basaltic rocks and their sedimentary hosts can be well correlated with the Triassic rifting, and related volcanic-sedimentary succession, in the Central Dinarides.
