Malignant nasal tumour in a white-tailed deer - a case report
In October 2004 head of shot white-tailed (Odocoileus virginianus) doe was presented to Ontario Veterinary College with reported 1-wk history of neurologic signs, emaciation and loss of fear toward humans. At necropsy, a large subcutaneous wound was observed over the right orbita, matching in position a small scar on the skin. A soft tissue destruction over the right orbital region was proved to be a consequence of necrotic process (confirmed by histological observation) followed by abscessation and fistulisation (scar on the skin). Such head abscesses in females (non-antlered animals) are most probably developed after single or repeated injury to certain part of the head or body (haematogenous spread of the infection). Saggittal section of the head revealed whitish, homogenous mass located in the caudal part of the nasal passages and extending into frontal sinuses. Histologicaly, mass was composed of sheets of monomorphic cells of infiltrative growth. Observed cells were positive for CD3 staining, nut negative for toluidin blue and moderately positive for vimentin (fibrous support of the tumour), indicating that tumour was of T-cell origin. Additional analysis for the presence of meningeal worms, Chronic Wasting Disease and rabies induced changes were negative.
