Solid state vs. solution photochemistry of N-(2-adamantyl)phthalimide

Photochemistry in the solid state has attracted considerable attention in last decades. The main interest for caring out photoreactions in the solid state is stereoselectivity which can not be attained in the solution phase. Besides, crystals provide ideal environments for studying the structure-reactivity relationship. In the scope of our research on the photochemistry of adamantane-phthalimides we turned our attention to photoreactions in the solid state. We discovered that photoreaction of N-(2-adamantyl)phthalimide in solution gives products with exo-alcohol prevailing in the photolysis mixture. On the other hand in the solid state, photochemical reaction is selective giving the endo-alcohol. The reason for the different selectivity of the reaction in the solution and the solid state will be discussed.
