Childhood pneumonia deaths: a new role for health workers?
Pneumonia continues to be the leading cause of child deaths globally, killing more than 2 million children each year. Deaths from pneumonia, more than any other major childhood disease, affect mainly underprivileged and poor children who have limited or no access to the health systems of their countries. Most of these deaths are potentially avoidable through the application of existing interventions. However, highly cost-effective interventions are neither being adequately implemented in local settings, nor carried out at a scale that reaches all children nationwide.
