E-business and Virtual Value Networks in Tourism and the Hotel Industry

The times in which we will live are indicative of profound change in contemporary economic practise and theory. We are speaking of a new digital or information economy. These changes are manifested in the globalisation of the economy, with national economies evolving into a single global space worldwide. The cause and effect of economic globalisation are technological advancements that impose new, unique and general standards of behaviour upon the world tourist market. Information and communication technologies have fused into a singular Internet technology. This has led to a so-called digital divide, separating people who are able to use the competitive advantages of modern internet technology from those who are not. The focus of production activities is shifting from the material sphere into the service field, with information becoming a primary business resource. Electronic marketplaces are created that differ radically from traditional markets in many of their features. E-business imposes an entirely different way of viewing traditional value chains, and it impacts on their transformation towards value networks through intensive and numerous interactions between tourism operators in the sphere of economy. New types of partnerships are emerging within the framework of virtual organisation, based on extranets.
