The Group Technology Concept

The traditional grouping method in batch manufacturing is functional grouping. In this approach, similar types of machines are grouped together. It has a number of limitations like considerable distance traveled by products, high levels of material handling and long lead time. To avoid this industrial manufacturing enterprises use group technology concept which basic idea is to manufacturing system be segmented into adequate subsystems. In order to do that it is necessary to form groups of products which are associated to these manufacturing subsystems. Group technology identify and brings together related or similar products and takes advantage of their similarities. Product are grouped into families of parts, and machines into manufacturing cells. Machine– part matrix representation is most frequently used to present the problems of group technology.
