Genetic Improvement of Grain Yield and Grain Quality of Soybean Genotypes

The primary objective of soybean breeding at The Osijek Agricultural Institute (Croatia) has been develop high yielding cultivar in the frame of 00 to II maturity group (0 and I maturity group in focus). Besides the high genetic yield potential, the new cultivars ought to have other agronomic traits satisfactory and also should be tolerant to various stresses that occur during the growing season. In this paper, it will be given a part of results of quantitative genetics research for grain yield and grain quality (content of protein and oil) into soybean genotypes 0 and I maturity group. The emphasis has been on mean value, heritability, genetic gain and phenotypic stability for grain yield and grain quality. Two microtrials, the one with 24 genotypes 0 maturity group (20 lines and 4 cultivars) and the other with 29 genotypes I maturity group (26 lines and 3 cultivars) were conducted at Osijek during growing season 1993-1997. The lines, selected for study, were derived from F4-F6 generation as promising lines into breeding program of Institute. Standard cultivars are registered cultivars of Institute that have grown in commercial production of our country. Selected genotypes were grown simultaneously in randomized complete block design with 3 replicates. The basic plot was 10m2. Conventional agronomic measures for soybean were applied on the both trials in each year. The obtained results from field and laboratory and their statistical analyses showed high variation, with significant differences in both grain yield and grain quality among tested genotypes in the same group of maturity and between groups of maturity. The wide-sense heritability estimate for grain yield, based on a set of lines, varied from 25.41 to 30.81% (mean 22.89%) for 0 maturity group and from 27.96 to 36.08% (mean 34.54%) for I maturity group, respectively. Average genetic gain from selection per year was 0.0289 t/ha for 0 maturity group and 0.0449 t/ha for I maturity group. The stability analyses showed high differences among genotypes in the stability of grain yield and its quality. According to the estimated parameters of stability, among 53 tested genotypes of both maturity group, only 8 genotypes (3 lines 0 maturity group and 4 lines and cultivar Tisa I maturity group) can be considered as fairly stable and as adaptable ones in all tested characters. Generally, the obtained results indicate progress in soybean breeding for grain yield and grain quality (contenet of protein and oil) at Institute. Furthermore, these results also clearly confirm that is possible to create soybean cultivars with high genetic potential and good stability of grain yield and grain quality in different environmental conditions.
