SUNEN - Croatian Solar Energy Utilization Program

In the beginning of 1997, the Croatian government accepted the National Energy Program and initiated more extensive elaboration of several prospective subprograms such as development of renewable energy sources, cogeneration, gasification, energy conservation, and more efficient utilisation of energy resources and energy transformation processes. Among them, Solar Energy Utilisation Program (SUNEN) is of great importance as the technical potential of solar energy (777 TWh) in Croatia is for orders of magnitude greater than other renewable energy source and about 9 times greater than total energy consumption in Croatia in 1996. In ten chapters, SUNEN encompasses the most important features of solar energy implementation such as: solar energy data of the country, international and domestic results and trends in solar energy application, definition and determination of the natural, technical, economic, commercial, and social potentials of solar energy in Croatia, discusses ecological and social implications, and legal, educational, financial, and marketing measures that should be undertaken. It proposes several pilot and demonstration projects in the field of solar low temperature conversion, solar heating and cooling, solar architecture and integration of active and passive elements in buildings, medium temperature conversion for industrial process heat as well as prototypes of solar thermal and photovoltaic power plants. Considerable investments have been envisaged in the production and testing of solar thermal equipment and devices, and in enlargement and modernisation of the existing photovoltaic module manufacturing plant in Split.
