Potential Reuse of Spent Foundry Sand

The foundry mould mixture is a combination of sand, binders, water, and additives. Sand particles as basic components make up 70-90% of the total mould mixture material. The production of castings generates approximately 2.5 t of spent foundry sand per tonne of steel cast, representing roughly 90% of solid foundry waste. Foundry sand can be regenerated ; therefore demand for new sand and exploitation of its natural basins decrease. Parts that can not be re-used are temporarily stored next to the foundry, in line with legal regulations, or tend to be used in civil engineering. The paper explores the used foundry sand from the land fill at the Felis Foundry in Sisak, Croatia. Physical-mechanical properties of the observed sample show the potential reuse of this material in roadway dam constructions.
