Influence of CO2 Emissions on the Possible Development of Metallurgy
CO2 emissions in various worlwide economical and industrial activities, as well as their role in the current and developmental technologies, are reviewed in this paper. Decrease of CO2 emissions in metallurgical production is possible with the increase of the share of iron ore reduction by H2 instead of carbon. Ore reduction operation by H2 raises the production costs because H2, as a reducing agent, is more expensive compared to carbon. For this reason, it is unlikely that the current carbon reduction technology will be substituted by the H2 reduction technologies in the near future, although intesified research in this direction has been conducted.
