Isolation and Identification of Commonly Isolated Moulds and Yeasts from Poultry Feed in Croatia
Contaminated feed is one of the most important sources of infection for poultry. It can cause nutrient losses and detrimental effects on animal health and production. As part of a National Program, processed feeds from feed factories in Croatia are regularly tested for total aerobic count, presence of bacteria of genera Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Clostridium as well as for other potentially pathogenic bacterial species and for the presence of yeasts and pathogenic moulds. No further identification of the yeasts is performed. This survey was carried out to evaluate the incidence of moulds and yeasts in poultry feed, as well as genera distribution of moulds and species distribution of yeasts. A total of 100 samples of feed were taken from regular monitoring program of factories located in Croatia, over a period of 6 months. Isolation and quantitative enumeration of fungal species were done on Potato dextrose agar, Czapek Dox agar and Sabouraud gentamicin chloramphenicol 2 agar. Moulds and yeasts were identified by conventional morphological methods. Additional characterisation of yeast isolates was obtained by API 20C AUX system according to assimilation reference tests for yeast identification. Results of microbiological screening of feed samples for moulds and yeasts are discussed
