RENAL OSTEODYSTROPHY IN DIABETIC PATIENTS ON LONG-TERM HEMODIALYSIS
Bone disease is often seen in patients with diabetes mellitus and in patients with chronic renal failure. The radiologic and biochemical parameters bone lesions were assessed in 20 insulin-dependent diabetic patients on long-term hemodialysis and 20 non-diabetic patients on long-term hemodialysis. The diabetic patients showed significantly lower parathyroid hormone levels and significantly higher levels of serum aluminium. Radiologic signs of secondary hyperparathyroidism were present only in nondiabetic patients. The clinical significance of relative "hypoparathyroidism" in insulin-dependent diabetic patients on longterm hemodialysis remains to be defined.
