Nourishment efficacy and nutritional status of privates in the Croatian Army

Objective: The aim of this research was to determine the efficacy of the prescribed diet regime on the nutritional status of privates in Croatian Army. Design: The research encompasses a sample of 112 privates during 2 months of basic training and 2 months of specialized training. The anthropometric methods were used for evaluation of nutritional status and the following variables were cover: weight, height, body mass index, skin fold test of the triceps and subscapular. Energy intake was determined by the computer program “ Hrana” (“ Food” ) as well as the protein, carbohydrates and fat share in the structure of whole day meals. The energy expenditure were determined with help of schedule of training and work, e.g. by the prescribed daily activities during basic and specialized training. Results: Results show negative energy balance during basic and specialized training. There was also inadequate energy share of protein, fat and carbohydrates in whole day meals. Anthropometric values show decrease during research period. Conclusion: Diet regime was inadequate because the energy balance was negative. As the result there was a significant drop in the values of the measured anthropometric variables.
