Thermodynamics of hydrobromic acid in 2-butanone + water mixtures (5, 10, and 15 mass per cent) from e.m.f. measurements
The e.m.f. of the cell: Pd / H_2(g) / HBr(m) / AgBr / Ag in 2-butanone + water mixtures (containing 5, 10, and 15 mass per cent 2-butanone) was measured at 288.15, 298.15, and 308.15 K in the range of HBr molality from 0.003 to 0.1 mol kg^-1. The standard e.m.f. of the cell has been evaluated at each temperature. The standard thermodynamic quantities for the cell reaction and the reaction of HBr formation have been determined from the standard potentials. Values of mean activity coefficients for hydrobromic acid, and the thermodynamic functions deltaGot, deltaHot, and deltaSot for the transfer of HBr from water to (2-butanone + water) are also reported. The transfer functions have been compared with those for (acetone + water) as well as for (alcohol + water) with small proportions of alcohol.
