Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis and Helicobater pylori

Diagnosis and therapy of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis are well known, while aetiology remains enexplained. This research proposes a hypothesis: Helicobacter pylori infection produces hyperaemia and edema of antropyloric region and results in narrowing of he pyloric channel. Pyloric hypertrophy develops consecutively due to intensified labour of the pyloric muscle system with intention to strain through the narrowed pyloric channel. The aim of this research was to prove the presence of Helicobacter pylori in patients with hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. Detecion of Helicobacter pylori was managed with amplified enzyme immunoassay for detection of Helicobacter pylori antigens in stool specimens (Dako, Denmark). The stool specimens of ten patients with confirmed diagnosis of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis were examined. This examination was also conducted in a control group of analogous age. This research did not prove the presence of Helicobacter pylori in patients with hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. The results in the control group were also negative. Despite negative results, the authors consider that further investigation (other diagnostic possibilities including endoscopy) should be carried out to confirm or exclude the proposed hypothesis.
