DIAGNOSTIC APPROACH TO PATIENTS WITH HIGH RISK OF TYPE I DIABETES MELLITUS
The prevalence of islet cell antibodies (ICA) in the first degree relatives with type 1 diabetes in Croatia was investigated. Serum ICA were determined by indirect immunofluorescence. ICA titer is expressed in Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDF) units. Out of all subjects examined, 12.50% were ICA positive and 1.97% had ICA titer above 20 JDF units. There were no statistically significant differences in the ICA prevalence according to sex, familial relationship and age. Similar studies are ethically justified only when they are part of approved intervention research.
