Incidence of stroke in central Dalmatia during the war in the Republic of Croatia (1991-1995)
A retrospective study of the stroke incidence in the Mid-Dalmatian region (County of Split) during the war in the Republic of Croatia was performed to establish whether the war could have influenced the incidence of brain infarct in affected population. Data collected were compared to the data on the stroke incidence in the pre-war period (1986-1990). No significant difference was found between two studied intervals, but a considerable increase in primary intracerebral hemorrhage (PICH) was recorded for the war period. Possible causes of the increse in the number of PICH patients were discussed.
