The effects of zinc upon the survival and regeneration of planarian Polycelis felina
In this paper we determined the toxic effect of zinc upon the planarian Polycelis felina in laboratory conditions. Results of zinc toxic effect were studied via histological, cytological and morphological changes on planarians. The toxic effect of zinc resulted in damages of cellular and mitochondrial membranes and higher mortality of zinc treated individuals. Morphological and locomotive changes were present in the form of irregular contractions of some planarian body parts. Smaller areas of body are depigmented due to decomposition of parenchyma cells. Outer mucous layer damages and decrease in number of rhabdites in epidermis were evident in numerous histological preparations. Damages to mitochondria were evident in cristae loss and outer mitochondrial membrane ruptures as well.
