Passing Judgements

One of the most influential additions to the higher education debate has been Bill Readings' University in Ruins (1997). The book can be said to offer a conclusion to the debate preceding it, because it spawned an array of works done by other academy scholars mostly concerned, as Readings' book was, with the function of the „ new“ University and the role of the intellectual, as well as with the necessary changes to the ethical and political underpinnings of its traditionally embraced research and teaching tasks. My contention is that the insistence on the discourse off dissensus is not adequate to the rapidly changing international conditions that surround and condition the work of the University. In a situation of rapidly growing enrolling rates and diversity in the University's subject matter it is difficult to sustain the discourse of „ ruins“ or even „ remnants“ that according to these works seem to be University's new destiny. The problem of University’ s function, I will argue in Reading’ s case, should no longer be framed within the oppositional terms of “ either/or” (consensus or dissensus).
