Failure mechanism of the open-cell cellular structure

Cellular structures have an attractive combination of physical and mechanical properties and have been increasingly used in modern engineering applications. Research of their behavior under quasi-static and high strain rates is valuable for engineering applications such as those related to impact and energy absorption. In this study the behavior of polyamide open-cell cellular structures is described. Cellular specimens with different number of layers have been produced using a rapid prototyping technique. A regular structure has been considered in order to assure certain degree of repeatability during the experimental testing. Quasi-static and dynamic compressive tests have been performed with a servo-hydraulic testing machine in order to evaluate and determine the influence of the layers’ number on the macroscopic response of the cellular structure. Additionally, the energy absorption properties were evaluated. During the mechanical loading the failure mechanism and structural collapse have been closely observed, too. By the experimental testing of the regular cellular structures it has been confirmed that bending and fracture of intercellular walls focused in one layer result in the layer-wise collapse mechanism. Additionally, it has been observed that the macroscopic behavior and the failure mechanism, as well as the energy absorption properties of the cellular structure strongly depend on the number of cellular structures’ layers.
