Temporal actinomycosis: report of a case
Actinomycosis is a saprophytic infection caused by actinomycetes, which ar part of the normal oral flora. It is a relatively infrequent infection in the cervicifacial region, despite the fact that neary 60% of human infections are cervicifacial. Trauma, usually in the form of a dental extraction, caries, and dental manipulation are sonsidered to be important factors in the pathogensis of the infection. These conditions provide a portal of entry deep into the tissues where the anaerobic conditions necessary for the growth of actinomycetes prevail. We describe a rara case of cervicofacial actinomycosis that occured in the temporal region.
