Fractionated illumination improves the outcome in the treatment of precancerous lesions with photodynamic therapy
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a noninvasive therapy for non-melanoma skin cancer, such as actinic keratosis (AK), Bowen's disease (BD) and superficial basal cell carcinoma. It involves the activation of photosensitizing precursor drug 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) by light producing activated oxygen species within tumor cells that results in their selective destruction.
