Rock Mass Reinforcement Systems in Open Pit Excavations in Urban Area

On the Kantrida location, in the part of the City of Rijeka, Croatia, the Water Sport Complex for European Championship 2008 is under construction. The garage building in the north part of overall location is the most geotechnical demanding part of complex. The existing accommodation buildings (petrol station and apartment building) and a traffic line on the north closely surround the construction location. The geotechnical conditions on site are very complex: on the lateral side’ s limestone rock-mass protrudes to the surface while in the east central part of the location is a ravine filled with deep clayly deposits. The natural terrain surface was significantly changed by the filling and cutting. Regarding the location morphology, the construction pit was designed based on the results of the performed complex geotechnical investigation works. The open pit has been constructed in several phases, with retaining construction in soil layers and rock mass reinforcement by the rock bolts and suitable reinforced system: mesh construction and multi-layered reinforced sprayed concrete. During the open pit construction, a monitoring system was established. An active design procedure was established which made possible changes required in the rock mass reinforcement system in cuts. In this paper, the work execution, so as the behavior of reinforcement systems comparing deformations obtained from numerical model and in situ measurements during the execution of the open pit are presented.
