Attitudes towards marriage and sexuality among adult population in Croatia

The research of the most spread traditional church religiosity, conducted in 2004 on a representative sample of 2220 adult respondents in Croatia, showed a very high level of spreading of traditional church religiosity (mostly Catholicism) in the dimensions of religious affiliation, religious identification and religious beliefs. On the level of values the differences between religious and non-religious respondents in acceptance of traditional and modern values were confirmed. Although analysis showed that religious respondents are more traditional than non-religious, their attitude towards abortion indicated that they vary from the one that their Church promote. This pointed to the need for analysis of some other attitudes in the field of morals. This paper analysis the data about acceptance of some Catholic values, particularly concerning marriage and sexuality among adult population: that woman should enter marriage as virgin ; sexual intercourse before marriage ; divorce ; sexual intercourse with the person of same sex ; affair with the married person ; extramarital children ; contraception ; homosexual marriages ; legalization of prostitution. The analysis will point to the degree in which attitudes of respondents vary from the church values thus indicating the process of privatization/individualization on the level of values, together with an impact of previous and present legacy.
