WINNERS AND LOOSERS IN THE TRANSITIONAL PERIOD Example of Croatia

Croatian society went through dynamic change in the last 30 years: decline of communism, disintegration of the Yugoslav state through war and destruction and creation of the new institution and state. Parallel process is economic stagnation in last 30 years, deindustrialization of economy accompanied with politically driven privatization is the changes often call transitional period. How all that change influences the social stratification is the Croatian society? The paper analyzes how the people perceived their financial situation and social position mobility in 2004 comparatively with 1990. The standard set of variables: as education, age, occupation, gender, party membership was used to control who are the looser in that transitional period. The finding shows that old people as well as party members are filing that they are financially worst and that they are downward mobile. Educated people are dealing much better with the political and economic change.
