SOME TECHNICAL MEASURES CONTROLING INTEGRITY AND STABILITY OF GRAVITY CONCRETE DAMS
During design and construction of the concrete gravity dams, we are dealing with mass concrete and it requires some additional understanding and treatments compare to the ˝normal˝ concrete which is used in majority of the concrete and reinforced concrete structures. Gravity dams resist loads by virtue of their shape and mass, and only secondarily by strength of concrete. Generally to achieve the required strength of concrete mix used in massive structures is simple task compare to ensure integrity of the entire structure. Therefore it is more important to ensure durability and stability of concrete gravity dams in long term by controlling properties connected with temperature behavior, strength of concrete lift joints and conditions of the dam-foundation interface. Although the concrete dams are very important structures which desire a ˝special attention˝ as their failure may cause loss of life in great numbers and huge economic loss for the society, there are many counters without regulatory rules addressing these issues. Due to luck of regulations, common practice is to follow the Guidelines or techniques applied in ˝normal practice˝. This paper presents the way of dealing with these issues during design and construction of the HE Lesce (concrete gravity dam) compare to experiences and observations from existing gravity dams in other countries.
