Analysis of surface topography and surface roughnes of CoCr alloy samples by atomic force microscopy
The aim of the study was to acquire a three-dimensional qualitative and quantitative nanoscale data of surface topography of electropolished CoCr dental alloy, actually of the two different solid solutions previously described as dendirites and interdendritic regions. Ten CoCr alloy samples (Wironit R extra hard, Bego, Germany) were prepared, cast and electropolished. The surface of the samples was recorded and analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), as well as with optical microscopy. The AFM enabled a three-dimensional surface view and it was understood that the surface structure of the CoCr alloy consisted of clusters of nanocrystalites forming islands (corresponding the dark interdendritic regions, which emerged from the undulating surface (corresponding to the light dendritic regions on optical micrographs).Maximum Z value ranged from 819, 98-1020, 99 nm, RMS values from 66, 93 to 108, 54 nm, and Ra values ranged from 51, 53-89, 48 nm. The surface revealed favorable characteristics regarding roughness, moreover the surface was so smooth that no mechanical retentive features for the microorganism trapping was present.
