University of Split servers for membrane polypeptides

The first version of bioinformatic server for prediction of secondary structure of membrane proteins was developed by the group of Davor Juretić (University of Split, Faculty of Science and Mathematics) in 1997 and named as SPLIT server. Computer program based on preference function algorithm was originally written in FORTRAN 77. The rest of the server was written in HTML, ANSI C (output data conversion and graphics) and Unix shell script language (CGI script). Since that time, several improvements have been introduced, primarily related to the improvement of preference function algorithm through training on larger set of proteins of known 3D structure, prediction of protein topology using charge clusters, and update of web server technology. In 2007 an additional server (or an extension of the SPLIT server) was developed for calculation of parameter named C1, which was used for prediction of therapeutic index (i.e. the ratio of hemolytic activity and activity against on E. coli) of antimicrobial peptides. Parameter C1 was calculated from composition of charged amino acid residues in peptide, specific patterns of amino acid residues, as well as from hydrophobicity and hydrophobic moments of peptide. This analysis can be performed starting from http://split.pmfst.hr/split/ and the results can be obtained from AMP_results_page. Current version of SPLIT server is 4.0, and is located at the University of Split on the link http://split.pmfst.hr/split/4/.
