Scientific and bioethic complaint against the generic engineering
General public opinion on genetic engineering (GE) modifications of plants, animals and food ingredients can be said to be controversial. Sadly enough, the main argument supporting GE is provided by the highly educated ; even if professionally distanced from molecular biology and genetics, the highly educated believe in science so firmly that they rule out any logical criticism considering it non-scientific. This paper will present, from the viewpoint of a plant breeder, the drawbacks of GE and the inadequate scientific approach of molecular biologists. Apart from science-related mistakes on which GE is based, the paper will discuss, pursuant to the Lošinj declaration, bioethical criticism concerning genetically modified organisms (GMO). The paper will conclude by elucidating economic and political background of genetic engineering.
