Management of Configuration for Distributed Systems -COMANDS

The great challenge of system administration is to create a stable environment in which multiple platforms coexist and interoperate. Traditionally, system management is done through manual file editing with help of shell scripts - a procedure which becomes increasingly difficult and error prone as the size of the network expands. Also that the level of human involvement in running of computer systems is getting unacceptably high and as a result major number of mistakes is caused primarily by the human factor. The COMANDS project addresses configuration management, one of the critical issues in distributed computing. Using a high level description language, we expect to develop a rapid deployment method for almost any kind of system or application software. This can be used both to document and enforce the desired policy, inter-relations and dependencies among all hosts from one single location. Policy compliance is periodically tested and repaired without the need for human intervention. Automated installation and management can also be used to systematically reproduce problems that are sometimes hard to find if a lot of manual procedures are involved.
