EU Terminology - Challenging the Terminological and Terminographic Principles
Translating the Acquis Communautaire, the total body of EU law, is a demanding task that each applicant country has to complete in order to become a member of the EU, since the EU legislation becomes binding for all full-fledged members. This prerequisite implies the need to develop a coherent terminological apparatus tailored for the specific EU content. Traditional terminological procedures, suitable for national-level terminologies, often have to be modified in order to meet the requirement of creating a terminological system that not only has to unequivocally reflect specific EU concepts but, at the same time, precisely correspond to all the official EU languages’ respective terminologies.
