Long-range Proton-Coupled Electron- and Hole Transfer between DNA Components in the solid State
Radiation induced charge transfer reactions in biological systems such as DNA may be coupled with proton transfer across hydrogen bonds between the base pairs. EPR spectroscopy has been used to study the Proton-Coupled Electron/Hole Transfer mechanism in a model system of single crystal of cytosine H2O doped with minute amounts of the hole acceptor thiocytosine, assumedly randomly intercalated in the crystals, X-irradiated (19 kGy) and observed at 10-150 K.
