The first step of the oxydation of ascorbate with substituted nitrosobenzenes is a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reaction and the observed kinetic isotope effects in the reaction, kH2O/kD2O, change dramatically with the change in solvent polarity, in line with the known theoretical predictions.
