Influence of the coarse fly ash (Class F) on the mechanical properties of the cement mortars
This study has examined the effect of fly ash used as replacement addition to the cement (CEM I 42, 5R) on development of compressive strength and on shrinking of cement mortars. Fly ash has been added as replacement addition to cement in the quantities of 0-40 mass %. A detailed chemical (X-ray diffraction), thermogravimetric and morphological (scanning electron microscope (SEM)) analyses of the hydrated samples are presented such as results of the influence fly ash on the developed compressive strength and shrinkage of the mortars. The increase replacement addition of fly ash reduces early strengths of cement mortars beside shrinkage decrease of the mortars, although in the later phase of hydration, due to the chemical role of fly ash (pozzolanic reaction). The effect of the pozzolanic reaction can be observed only after 60 days of hydration.
