Total hydroxycinnamic derivatives assay: prevalidation and application on Mediterranean Lamiaceae species
The prevalidation strategy was applied to evaluate UV/Vis spectrophotometric procedure with nitrite-molybdate reagent for total hydroxycinnamic derivatives determination (THD procedure). Favorable prevalidation characteristics verified this procedure as a valuable tool in plant analysis and it was successfully applied for determination of total hydroxicinnamic derivatives (THD) in various medicinal plants of Lamiaceae family growing in Croatia. The most of Mediterranean Lamiaceae species contain considerable amounts of these secondary metabolites, especially rosmarinic acid, which has a number of interesting biological activities, e.g. antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial. Our results showed the variety of THD content between investigated plant species. Plants used in official medicine, such as Lavender, Sage, Thyme, Rosemary, and Lemon Balm contained THD from 2.08% to 5.97%, respectively. The highest quantity of THD (7.10%) was found in the Croatian endemic species Micromeria croatica (Pers.) Schott.
