Incidence of concurrent sexually transmitted infections in Rijeka region

The aim of this study was to analyze the incidence of concurrent sexually transmitted infections in Rijeka region. In this pilot study, we tested patients (suspected to have a STI) for 6 different infections (Treponema pallidum, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis, Candida spp., Chlamydia trachomatis and HIV). During a 3 months period 49 patients with STI were diagnosed (age 29.5± 9.8 years), at the Department of Dermatovenereology, University Hospital Center, Rijeka. The patients were mainly men (91.8%), because the female population was primarily examined and treated by gynaecologists. Condylomata acuminata were diagnosed in 27 (55.1%) patients, gonorrhea in 2 (4.1%), Chlamidyia trachomatis in 22 (44.9%), Herpes simplex in 1 (2.0%) and Candida spp. in 3 (6.1%) cases. The great majority of them, who were diagnosed to have genital warts, had no symptoms that could have been associated with other STI. In 10 (37.0%) cases of condylomata acuminata, a second STI was diganosed, while in 3 (11.1%) cases there was a third co-infection also. In patients without genital warts, only in 3 (13.6%) cases a concurrent STI was diagnosed. A larger study should be made to analyze the epidemiological situation of concurrent STI in Croatia.
