HOW ACCESS TO ELECTRONIC ENTERTAINMENT MEDIA CONTRIBUTES TO SEDENTARY SCREEN-BASED BEHAVIORS AND TO OVERWEIGHT OR OBESITY Vesna Jureša1, A.Juriša1, D.Brkljačić2, N.Ferenčić2, M.Đanić-Kojić2, S.Šarac2, J.Vidović2 1Andrija Štampar School of Public Health Medical School University of Zagreb, Croatia 2Public Health Institute City of Zagreb, Croatia OBJECTIVES: Study examines associations between children's television viewing, computer and internet use and eating and drinking habits. METHODS: Children in 5th and 8th grade from 6 elementary schools completed a questionnaire about time they watch television, use computer or internet on typical school day and on typical weekend day. Children answered how often they eat and drink while watching TV and using computer. BMI was calculated from measured height and weight at last medical exemination. We exemined relationship between time they spend in front of electronic media and BMI. Participants were distributed in three groups by BMI(“ Cole” standards): normaly nutritioned, overweight, obese. RESULTS: Of 526 participants, 257 fifth- and 269 eight-grade students. There are 11, 9% overweight students in fifth- and 17, 5% in eight-grade, also there are 3, 6% obese students in fifth- and 2, 1% in eight-grade. Computer at home have 95% children regardless BMI. From all overweight and obese students, 26% in fifth grade and 50% in eight grade are using computer three or more hours per school day. Every third overweight and obese student use computer four and more hours on weekend day. Internet acces at home have 74%-86% students depending on BMI. Frequency of internet use doesn't differ in three groups. There is no relationship between internet using and eating and drinking regarding BMI. Eating habits while TV watching doesn't differ regarding BMI. CONCLUSION: This pilot study showed that overweight and obese students spend more time using computer and watching television but not internet . Nutritional habits are similar in all three groups.
