Polysemy in translation
The present paper examines polysemy in the context of translation. The aim of this paper is to shed some light on how the translator chooses the ‘ right’ meaning of a polysemous word or phrase. In order to disambiguate polysemous words and to select the intended reading of a polysemous word, translators need to find certain indicators or markers serving as disambiguation tools. Using examples from the British National Corpus, I investigate which kinds of markers or indicators are most commonly used. Although so-called grammatical words, such as prepositions and conjunctions as well as word-forming morphemes also show interesting polysemous features, due to the limited extent of this paper, the scope of this research is restricted to the polysemy of nouns and phraseological units.
