Effects of rumen protected methionine MepronR, Degussa, Germany supplementation on the milk production and somatic cells count in milk

The aim of this study was to estabilish whether the supplementation of 15g rumen protected methionin (Mepron)to the daily ration of high producing dairy cows influence the milk production and somatic cells count in milk. The investigation was carried out on the Holstein cows kept in modern free-stand, equipped with the computerized milking-fed unit. Daily ration consisted of corn silage 15kg, grass silage 13 kg, hay ad libitum and the concentrate was supplied according to the individual production. Daily dry matter intake was 22-25 kg. All animals producing 25 L ore more milk daily, regardless of the numbers of day in lactation, were included in the study. The animals were devided in two groups: the experimental group (23) and control group (28). The experimental group of animals was supplemented individually with 15 g Mepron daily. Nevertheless, this product contains 85 percent methionine. During the experiment which was carried out through four months, each month the milk production and somatic cells count were measured, as also concentration of methionine in blood. The results were statistically evaluated by package of commercial computer program. The milk production of experimental group during whole examined period was higher in comparison to control group with statistically significant differences in second, third and fourth experimental period (P=0,001; P=0,000004; P=0,00000007). Somatic sells count was lower in experimental group in all examined periods in comparison to control group (44000, 326000, 189000,28000 respectively). Although the differences are noticeable, if were not statistically confirmed. There were not any significantly differences between experimental and control group.in methionin blood concentration in milk. The results undoubtedly suggest that the supplementation of MepronR to the high producing dairy cows increases the milk production in the experimental group, even though the control group was supplemented with corresponding dose of analogous product. The influence of the somatic cell count, although not statistically confirmed, indicate the positive influence on the metabolic pathways, e.g. synthetic processes in the mammary gland, were methionin is an important element, These results should be additionally investigated on a large number of animals, possibly with the control group unsuplemented with methionin.
