Sažetak
In April 1747 the British General Thomas Wentworth embarked on a secret military mission to the Courts of Vienna and Turin with the assignment to reconciliate the Habsburg Queen Maria Theresia and her Sardinian ally King Charles Emmanuel II in order make a military invasion of south France possible. General Wentworth had to investigate to what extend both allies fulfilled their obligations laid down in the Convention of the Hague three months earlier. According to that Convention Austria had to furnish an army of 60, 000 men and the Sardinian King an army half that size. Instead of bringing both Courts together, Wentworths mission only ended in adding fuel to the flames and relations deteriorated with the General caught up in the middle. After General Wentworth died unexpectedly in Turin just before winter set in, King George II decided to send another mission in February 1748. This new envoy was lead by General James St. Clair and comprised of Colonel Harry Erskine, Captain James Grant and the Scottish philosopher David Hume. However, the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle was already in the making when they reached the Continent and concluded before their return to Great Britain.
