Psychometric properties of the Croatian short forms of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-CRO14)

Introduction: Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) has been one of the most sophisticated instruments developed to measure the impact of oral health on the quality of life. Therefore, it has been translated from original English-language version into many other languages and has been used worldwide. Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop a short form of the Croatian version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-CRO14), following the accepted cross-cultural adaptation technique guidelines. The psychometric properties of the new instruments were evaluated in the new cultural context in the typical populations. Materials and Method The original version was translated to Croatian language by using a forward-backward translation method and the psychometric properties (validity, reliability and responsiveness) of the OHIP-CRO14 were tested on 239 subjects. Results Construct validity was tested on 193 selected subjects, and was confirmed by the association between the OHIP summary scores and self-reported oral health. Test-retest reliability, tested on 55 subjects, showed high intraclass correlation coefficients. Internal consistency was tested on 172 subjects and was confirmed by high Cronbach's alpha (0.78-0.90). Resposiveness was tested on 21 patients with a treatment demand (toothache), and was confirmed by a statistically significant mean OHIP score range and a high effect size (3, 00), respectively. Conclusions Adequate psychometric properties in a typical patient population prove the OHIP-CRO14 instrument suitable for assessment of OHRQoL in Croatia.
