Heredity influences on zinc and manganese status in corn
Six corn inbred lines and their 30 single-cross hybrids were grown under field conditions on eutric cambisol (randomized block design with three replications ; area of basic plot 5.04 m2 = 36 plants per plot). The ear-leaf was taken in each plot when the plants were in the silking stage. Considerable genetically influences for leaf composition were found (ranges from 14.0 to 28.3 mg Zn and from 80.7 to 244.3 mg Mn kg-1). Os657 and Os138 characterized the lower leaf Zn (mean 18.0 mg Zn kg-1) in comparison with remaining four parents (mean 25.0 mg Zn kg-1) and they correspondingly reflected on leaf Zn in their hybrids as male effects only (means: 18.0 and 20.5 mg Zn kg-1, respectively). Os 138 characterized low leaf Mn (80.7 mg Mn kg-1) and this property reflected on correspondingly Mn status in its ten hybrids (mean 139.9 mg Mn kg- 1) with equal influences of female and male parent. Remaining five parents and their twenty hybrids had considerable higher leaf Mn (mean 126.5 and 171.8 mg Mn kg-1, for the parents and hybrids, respectively). However, low correlations were found between corn yields and leaf Zn and Mn (r = -0.31 and r = 0, 32, respectively).
