Self-evaluation of quality of life in multiple sclerosis patients

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) affecting mainly young adult persons with already formed attiotudes and goals in their lives. The course of the disease and the degree of disability are unpredictable, leading to psychologic difficulties that are not taken care od during the treatment of somatic disorders. The quality of life of MS patients was compared with that of healthy people of the same gender, age and basic socioeconomic status. The Kolesarić-Krizmanič rating scale was used, which considers satisfaction with previous life, satisfaction with the life during the preceding year, satisfaction with achievement of ones own goals and wishes, epectations to realize previous unfulfilled plans, and comparison of ones own with the lives of friends and neighbors. The stud inclued 37 MS patients with clinically verified and laboratory supported definite MS, and 51 healthy volunteers. The group were comparable. Statistically significant differences between the groups were found for the variables describing overall satisfaction with previous life and those dealing with future projections and expectations. MS patients were not satisfied with what they had achieved, and were not enthusiastic or optimistic about their future expectations. The results showed the quality of life of MS patients to be significantly impaired and lower compared with healthy people, especially concerining perspectives they could expect in their future life.
