Antibodies to Tamm-Horsfall protein in endemic nephropathy
The aim of the study was to investigate the possible role of antibodies to Tamm-Horsfall protein (anti-THP) in the early diagnosis of endemic nephropathy (EN). Anti-THP (IgA,IgG,IgM classes) were determined by direct ELISA in 159 subjects from the endemic village of Kaniza, who were divided into four groups according to the WHO criteria i.e. diseased, suspected, "at risk", and others. Results were compared to the results obtained in subjects from the non-endemic village of Klakar and in healthy subjects from Zagreb. No differences were observed in the values of any class of antibodies, either among the groups of subjects from the endemic village of Kaniza (p>0,05) or between these subjects and those from the non-endemic village of Klakar (p>0,05). The values of IgM class af anti-THP exceed those of IgA and IgG classes anti-THP in all subject groups (p<0,05). The values of all three classes were higher in rural than in urban population (p<0,05). Determination of anti-THP was not find useful in the early diagnosis of endemic nephropathy. The results suggested most of anti-THP to be "natural" and/or cross reactive. The highest values observed in the rural population could be explained with the exposition to some ubiquitous antigen.
