DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS OF VERTIGO

Vertigo is the illusion of motion, usually rotationnal motion.Vertigo is among the most common symptoms causing patients to visit a physician, and as patients become older the incidence of vertigo increases.Vertigo can be caused by an inner ear disturbance-peripheral vertigo, by a central disturbance-central vertigo, by systematic diseases, or it can be psychogenic. The most common cause of vertigo are benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, acute vestibular neuronitis, Ménier's disease, migraine, anxiety disorders, vertebrobasilar ischemia and tumors of the pontocerebellar angle. It is important to distinct between peripheral and central vertigo in order to guide management decisions. In this article a differential diagnosis of vertigo is presented.
